Advantages and disadvantages of PTFE and ETFE membrane materials

PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene) membrane materials and ETFE (ethylene-tetrafluoroethylene copolymer) membrane materials are two commonly used high-performance membrane materials in construction. They each have their own advantages and disadvantages in terms of performance, application scenarios, and cost, as detailed below:

Advantages and Disadvantages of PTFE Membrane Materials
Advantages:
* **Extremely High Durability:** The PTFE in the coating is highly stable against acids, alkalis, ultraviolet light, and other chemicals, and is not prone to discoloration or cracking after long-term use.
* **Glass Fiber Substrate:** It does not deteriorate during long-term use, maintains high strength, and has a service life exceeding 25 years.
* **Excellent Fire Resistance:** Meets the fire resistance standards of most countries, with a Class A (flame-retardant) fire rating, and can replace traditional roofing materials.
* **Good Self-Cleaning and Anti-fouling Properties:** The surface has a low coefficient of friction, making it difficult for dust and dirt to adhere. Rainwater can easily wash it away, resulting in low maintenance costs.
* **Unique Optical Properties:** The membrane surface is milky white or semi-transparent, with a light transmittance of 10%~50% and a light reflectance of 70%~80%, which can evenly scatter natural light, avoiding glare and shadows.


**Advantages and Disadvantages of PTFE Membrane Materials:** High Structural Strength: Medium-strength PTFE membranes are only 0.8mm thick, achieving tensile strength comparable to steel, and have a low modulus of elasticity, easily forming complex curved surfaces.

Disadvantages: High Cost: Material and processing costs are significantly higher than PVC membranes; specialized tools and techniques are required for construction, resulting in a large initial investment.

Poor Flexibility: The fiberglass substrate is easily broken; excessive bending must be avoided during construction, requiring strict process control.

Lower Light Transmittance: Compared to ETFE membranes, PTFE has lower light transmittance (maximum 50%), necessitating supplemental artificial lighting.

ETFE Membrane Advantages and Disadvantages:
Advantages: Excellent Light Transmittance: Known as "soft glass," single-layer transparent films achieve up to 95% light transmittance, while white films have 50%~55% transmittance. Light can be adjusted by printing patterns.
Lightweight and Excellent Physical Properties: Density is only 1% of glass, with strong tear resistance.
Strong Weather and Chemical Corrosion Resistance: Does not degrade even after long-term exposure to harsh environments.
Outstanding Self-Cleaning Function: Smooth surface; dust and dirt are easily washed away by rainwater, resulting in long cleaning cycles. Recyclable: Waste ETFE membrane material can be melted into granules for reprocessing, meeting green environmental protection requirements.

Disadvantages:
Tensile strength is lower than that of fabric membrane materials.
Structural span is limited; the economical span for a single air cushion is generally 3-5m. Spans greater than 10m require multiple layers or steel cable reinforcement.

High inflation and maintenance costs: Inflatable ETFE air cushions rely on automated equipment to maintain air pressure.

Potentially produces toxic gases in a fire: Combustion produces carbon monoxide and fluorocarbons, but there are no open flames or dripping residues; smoke and toxic gases are easily discharged.
